Microsoft Drops Smart Tags From Windows XP | |

Microsoft has decided to exclude Smart Tags--a technology that could alter the Web surfing habits of millions of consumers--from the version of Windows XP that will ship later this year. As first reported by CNET News.com, the Redmond, Wash.-based company has included Smart Tags in the most recent test versions of Windows XP, an upgrade to the Windows operating system. But a company spokesman said Wednesday that the technology will not be included in the final version that will be released Oct. 25. Although the Smart Tags feature was included in Internet Explorer 6, the Web browser that is bundled with current beta versions Windows XP, it will be dropped from the final product. "At this time we just don't believe it's going to be ready when (Windows XP) ships in October," Microsoft spokesman Jim Cullinan said late Wednesday. "External feedback" was one of the factors that led the company to remove the feature, although he indicated it could be resurrected in later versions. | ||

| #8 Screw you, and the people like you, you have NO idea what smart tags are, and how they work in IE6, and it's because idiots like you that they are not going to be included, it was a VERY nice feature to have. |

Foo Fighter you are a tard. This is very unfortunate as I too was looking forward to this feature. Smart Tags in Office XP are great. I am dissappointed they won't be included.

| What bothered me about Smart Tags, despite the fact that I have never seen either XP or IE6, was that I didn't want links where the author of the page didn't program them. It seemed an...intrusion. I prefer that text show up as text, not with underlines, because underlines MEAN something; either the title of a book or a tool for emphasis. So I'd prefer less links in a page, not more. That being said, I also prefer to have MORE features that I can turn of rather than LESS. If they're turned off by default, and I can turn them off easily, then put them in there! Give *ME* the options! I don't want egotistical immature children and linux geeks deciding for me what features are in programs I use. |

| Jaggedflame - As I said clearly in my post, as long as I can turn them off easily, I want the option left in. Your additional information about the details of how versatile smart tags are and how easy they are to disable was information I didn't have. It makes me particularly upset that they were dropped. |

| #18, I agree with you, Smart Tags will be back, but they are a young technology and are not without their bugs. I use Office XP and IE 6 (2479) and although there are occasional benefits to them, I find it anoying that they can't diferentiate between "long" and "Long" a persons name, now everytime I type a sentance like "...walking down a long corridor..." I end up with a Smart Tag for some major league player thanks to ESPN! Once they address these kind of imaturities in the technology, and continue to allow for it to be turned on and off, it is a worthwile *option* to have. |
