A $4.6 million NEC server using Microsoft Windows has grabbed high marks in a closely watched performance ranking traditionally dominated by machines running the Unix operating system. The fifth-place ranking on the Transaction Performance Council's TPC-C speed test is an important step in Microsoft's years-long struggle to have its software used not only on PCs and low-end networked "server" computers, but also on high-end machines. Such servers often handle vital corporate computing tasks, such as tracking inventory or managing bank accounts. | ||

*sigh*. ZDNet's bias is so obvious, it makes me sick.
What they so glaringly, and purposely forget to mention, is that MS has dominated the TPC-C since around Windows 2000 Beta 3 time. They've maintained a consistent 5 to 8 slots on the TPC-C top 10 since that time. See for yourself! http://www.tpc.org/tpcc/results/tpcc_perf_results.asp What ZDNet is talking about is "Non-clustered" or single-server performance in which MS has slowly been creeping up on Unix. It's pertinent to note that MS's clustered results are something like 50-70% better than the top single-server Unix box, and less than half the cost. |

#1, the full article does explain that it's talking about non-clustered performance and that MS has done well on clusters. It's disappointing that the headline and opening paragraph don't mention this, but that's not uncommon for any news article. If it wasn't, Jay Leno would run out of material for his Headlines bit.
I have to admit, in the real world, few mortals have the ability to configure and manage the kinds of clusters that MS has been submitting to TPC-C. In theory, the organizations that are trying to implement this level of performance with SQL Server should have a Premier contract and a TAM who can bring MCS in to help. But that still only covers the software side. For the kind of attention you need to get from a hardware vendor, the price of those commodity clusters isn't going to do it. You have to buy big iron with big margin, hence the need for MS to address non-clustered configurations. |
