Microsoft upgrade plan gets cold shoulder | |

The majority of Microsoft's customers won't be signing up for a controversial licensing plan set to go into effect on Thursday, according to analysts' estimates. Signing onto the plan, which would commit business customers to a two- or three-year annually paid contract guaranteeing the right to upgrade, will be the only way to continue buying Microsoft software at deep discounts. The holdouts have until the end of their business day on Wednesday to sign up for the plan or risk paying full price the next time they buy software from Microsoft. They won't get a reprieve, either. Microsoft has twice extended the deadline for the new program, but a representative said Monday that there would be no more extensions. | ||

Do you seriously think Licensing 6.0 was the result of slow OfficeXP sales? Are you kidding? Licensing 6.0 was set to go into effect on 10/1/01. Whereas, OfficeXP only began selling somewhere around May 2001. ---- And #8... "I don't think anybody can ague that Microsoft's motivation for this new plan was not to make more money." Here's a little definition for you... Capitalism - An economic system in which the means of production and distribution are privately or corporately owned and development is proportionate to the accumulation and reinvestment of PROFITS gained in a free market. That's right... PROFITS. I, as one of the millions of Microsoft shareholders, EXPECT and REQUIRE my company to MAXIMIZE profits. And before you jump on the term FREE MARKET... know this... that you have the power, the complete power to not choose Microsoft products. YOU, and only YOU freely choose to buy them time and time again. And don't even try to quibble about how hard it is to buy a pc without Windows. YOU CAN DO IT. YOU CHOOSE NOT TO. |

In addition to #10's comments about Office XP, we should add that Licensing 6.0 occurred even before Windows XP was released.
XBOX a failure? According to the latest numbers I've seen it is second to PlayStation 2 with a market share of about 30%. That doesn't seem a failure to me. |

| We were told this only effects Server OS's, our Corp offices told all us IT Managers that XP Upgrade and Office XP Upgrade are still available for purchase and to budget accordingly for next year. We buy Windows XP Pro Upgrade licenses and install 2K Pro, since they will not sell us 2K licenses after this. |

bob670 - Here is a prediction...
XBox outsells PS2 for Christmas 2002. I'm basing that on the fact that XBox has now become the hot game console to get, with massive sales increases since the price cut. I know six people alone who just bought one. One friend lives in an apartment complex and they have like a dozen people with them... they're stringing ethernet cable down the hallways so they can do multiplayer. |

sodablue, that is quite a stretch goal for Christmas 2002, but I would agree that for the year 2003... XBox will outsell PS2.
For those not following video games (Darn XBox got me interested in video games again after 10 years of relaxation)... XBox has some absolutely phenomenol titles coming out before Christmas of this year. Panzer Dragoon (Sega's BIG seller, an XBox exclusive now. Oh and yes Sega is a Japanese company), not to mention the exclusive Crazy Taxi 3 that is just shipped. Brute Force (MS will make a killing off this one in October. This will be the 4th title to hit a million units sold) Blinx (watch out Mario. This title is good, and geared toward kids and adults alike) XBox LIVE (their online service) - WOW. My $50 awaits... Like 7 Mech (the Japanese LOVE them) games this year 300 games in development, 60 of which will use the online XBox LIVE service. Ok, so obviously MS has sucked me in. I'm far too old to be this interested and into video games, but I've got the disposable income to spend on them... even in a down economy. That fact says it all... that MS has built interest, dug a niche, and is innovating. Watch Out! |

| Hmm.. Think it is more likely that after Christmas Xbox's going to be in third place on the console market: it is allready far behind in Europe and Japan and there's a whole string of high-profile games underway for the Gamecube until the end of the year (Mario Sunshine, Legend of Zelda, etc. etc.). MS is probably going to need the money from Licensing 6.0 now more than ever.. |
