  • DreamWorks to bow colossal ``Gladiator'' DVD
Time: 06:13 EST/11:13 GMT | News Source: Press Release | Posted By: Matthew Sabean

DreamWorks is hoping to slay all comers in the DVD arena with its elaborate double-disc special edition of ``Gladiator'' on Nov. 21. The package will include more than four hours of extra material -- among the most for a release of a recent theatrical hit.

The studio is expected to announce Tuesday that it is mounting its biggest single marketing campaign ever for homevideo. The release includes a rental-priced VHS edition, but most of the media blitz slated for Thanksgiving weekend will focus on the DVD edition, the most elaborate ever created by DreamWorks.

Company officials are said to expect near-record initial sales of 2 million to 3 million units and anticipate that the picture -- which generated $185 million at the domestic box office, the second highest tally of the year -- will be the best-selling DVD of the year.

The price point of $29.99 (comparable to some standard edition releases) will help. It is also one of the few titles to feature both Dolby Digital and the space-hogging DTS surroundsound on the same dual-layered disc featuring the 2-1/2-hour movie, just as DreamWorks' ``American Beauty'' will when it is released on Oct. 24.

  • Image Entertainment Announces DVD Releases of Two Films About Fantasy Filmmaking Pioneer George Pal
Time: 13:10 EST/18:10 GMT | News Source: Press Release | Posted By: Matthew Sabean

Image Entertainment, Inc. today announced the DVD release of two award-winning feature films about the life and work of pioneering fantasy and science fiction filmmaker George Pal.

On September 19, Image will release the documentary ``The Fantasy Film Worlds of George Pal,'' followed on November 14 by the release of the anthology film ``The Puppetoon Movie,'' both made by director Arnold Leibovit. Both DVD releases are special editions and will include substantial supplemental material, much of it previously unavailable to the public.

Considered to be the father of the modern sci-fi film, George Pal created more than 40 ``Puppetoons'' for Paramount Pictures in the 1940s, utilizing thousands of individually carved puppets, animated in stop-motion, to produce each short film. Pal was an admitted influence on filmmakers ranging from Gene Roddenberry to Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. During the 1940s, his studio staff included such animation luminaries as Willis O'Brien (``The Lost World'') and Ray Harryhausen (``Jason and the Argonauts,'' ``The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad''). In the early 1950s, Pal began to work on feature film projects that combined live-action with stop-motion animation. Pal produced or directed many films considered science fiction and fantasy classics, including ``Destination Moon'' (also available on DVD from Image Entertainment), ``When Worlds Collide,'' ``The War of the Worlds,'' ``tom thumb,'' ``The Time Machine,'' ``The Seven Faces of Dr. Lao'' and ``The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm.'' Pal's films won a total of eight Academy Awards, and his special effects techniques, as well as his unique, humanistic vision, continue to influence filmmakers today. A remake of 1960's ``The Time Machine'' is currently in production at Dreamworks.

  • "Survivor" Mastermind Spills Sequel Secrets, DVD Plans
Time: 13:08 EST/18:08 GMT | News Source: E-Online | Posted By: Matthew Sabean

He's created a reality-television phenomenon, sparked water-cooler conversations, office pools, and lined up thousands of regular folks hoping for their own shot at $1 million. Put it this way: If Richard Hatch is Survivor's Darth Gaydar, consider this guy the Emperor. He's Mark Burnett, the mastermind behind CBS' summer TV smash (which returned Friday in reruns), the purveyor of a new book dishing behind-the-scenes Survivor juice--and now the guy who wants to shoot some regular American schmuck into the heavens for a televised rendezvous with Russia's space station Mir.

The 40-year-old executive producer is currently consumed with promoting his island chronicles--Survivor hit book stores Tuesday--and finishing casting for the highly anticipated sequel Survivor: The Australian Outback. ("I'm back to casting at nine o'clock, and we'll probably go through the night," he tells E! Online, on his way to another book signing in Los Angeles.)

Burnett also confirms that a Survivor DVD is in the works. A VHS edition of the Survivor series is expected to hits stores after the Olympics, but given the lengthy turnaround time for DVDs (at least three months), a souped-up digital version, complete with unseen footage, most likely wouldn't hit stores until Survivor's sequel debuts January 28 after the Super Bowl. Viacom-owned Paramount Home Video has yet to make an official announcement.

John Cusak (Being John Malkovich) stars as Rob Gordon, the owner of a semi-failing record store located on one of the back streets of Chicago. But Rob’s business isn’t the only thing in his life that’s floundering – his needle skips the love groove when his longtime girlfriend Laura (newcomer Iben Hjejle) walks out on him. And this forces him to examine his past failed attempts at romance the only way he knows how! For a rocking fun time, give High Fidelity a spin. It’s sure to make your all-time top-five list for comedies – with a bullet!

Time: 04:10 EST/09:10 GMT | News Source: ActiveDVD | Posted By: Matthew Sabean

Darren Bisbey has posted his review of the DVD Titanic. Here is a snippet from his review:

Ok we all know the facts about the Titanic! An unsinkable ship that discovers very quickly it wasn't as unsinkable as the makers first thought. I'm not sure how many films have been made about that fateful night in 1911. (I haven't ruined the plot of a story this was a true and sad story about the 'ship of dreams' and the lives lost on that night.) This is a modern day remake of the events leading up to and including the demise of Titanic. The film was produced, directed and written by James Cameron (Terminator 2, Aliens and The Abyss) This remake was the most financially successful film of the decade. Utilizing the latest computer animation ever seen at the time. I saw the film at the cinema and can remember having to remind myself that the real Titanic was 2 miles underneath the ocean.

Joseph Wecker's song about a binary computer code wasn't exactly a chart-topper, but he doesn't think MP3.com should have banned it.

The popular music Web site today removed the song, in which Wecker, sounding more than a little like a 1960s sit-in protester, sings a version of the banned computer code known as DeCSS.

In an email letter to Wecker, MP3.com cited the nature of the music lyrics for the song's eradication. "Your song has either a song title or lyrics that are offensive or otherwise inappropriate," the company wrote.

Because some Amazon.com customers paid more than others, the company is refunding the difference from the lowest price paid. Amazon.com will continue to conduct price testing on its Web site, but will, as a matter of policy, offer refunds to anyone who paid a higher price as part of the test. DVD customers were expected to receive e-mails notifying them of their refunds on Wednesday.

  • ActiveDVD: Fight Club: Special Edition - Review
Time: 05:50 EST/10:50 GMT | News Source: ActiveDVD | Posted By: Matthew Sabean

Darren Bisbey has posted his review of the recently released DVD Fight Club. Here is a snippet from his review:

Fight Club could be easily put amongst the genre of a thriller movie, but although this title does fit certain aspects of the movie, it would be better placed in the new category of films that has recently risen. The category of 'must see that again'. Fight club is dark, moody, funny and provocative. I was recommended to watch this movie, but I stayed away from it's general cinema release and waited for the DVD release. I was not disappointed.

The DVD is of high quality and found the menus easy to use. With this particular edition there are two discs, the second disk contains: behind the scenes with multiple camera angles and commentary, out-takes, deleted scenes etc.

Some Amazon.com customers are fuming over random discounts on some of the e-tailer's most popular DVDs.

The variable prices affected more than half of the company's top-100 best-selling DVDs, or digital versatile discs. Depending on the particular movie and the discount Amazon offered, one customer could pay up to $15 more for a DVD than another customer.

"This is a bad idea," one customer wrote on the popular DVD Talk discussion forum, where the price differences first came to light. "I can see why they'd want to survey what they sell, but this is definitely the wrong way to do it."

  • Ricoh Announces New, Faster CD-R/RW DVD-ROM Combo Drive
Time: 18:00 EST/23:00 GMT | News Source: Press Release | Posted By: Matthew Sabean

Ricoh's Disc Media and Systems Center division (DMS-C) will begin shipping the fastest new CD-R/RW/DVD-ROM combination drive on the market at the beginning of the fourth quarter, the company announced today. Priced at $349 (MAP) the MP9120A (atapi) has 12X CD-R and 10X CD-RW recording speed, 32X CD-ROM and 8X DVD-ROM read speeds. Ricoh is one of only three companies manufacturing combination drives; the remainder of units on the market are from OEMs. The MP9120A will be available through the Ricoh CD online store at http://www.buyricohcd.com , other major retailers, e-tailers, distributors, and through OEM channels.

Targeted toward mid-to high end audio, multimedia and other users with drive speed concerns, the MP9120A has other characteristics, such as error prevention, that will make it popular among ``pro-sumers.''

As the first manufacturer to deliver a drive with newly developed error prevention technology, called JustLink, Ricoh will provide other drive makers with the new technology and include it in future Ricoh-brand CD-R/RW drives. JustLink automatically prevents buffer under-run errors by predicting them before they occur. Stable writing is especially difficult with high-speed writing, recording simultaneously while performing other computer operations, writing files to a CD-R/RW drive from a CD-ROM drive, and recording directly from a network.

  • Released This Week: Any Given Sunday: Special Edition Director's Cuticon
Time: 05:00 EST/10:00 GMT | News Source: ActiveDVD | Posted By: Matthew Sabean

Life is a contact sport and football is life when three-time Academy Award–winning filmmaker Oliver Stone and a dynamic acting ensemble explore the fortunes of the Miami Sharks in Any Given Sunday.

At the 50-yard line of this gridiron cosmos is Al Pacino as Tony D’Amato, the embattled Sharks coach facing a full-on blitz of team strife plus a new, marketing-savvy Sharks owner (Cameron Diaz) who’s sure Tony is way too old-school. An injured quarterback (Dennis Quaid), a flashy, bull-headed backup QB (Jamie Foxx), a slithery team doctor (James Woods) and a running back with an incentive-laden contract (LL Cool J) also provide some of the stories that zigzag like diagrams in a playbook. And throughout, there’s the awesome spectacle of motion, sound and action orchestrated into “Oliver Stone’s most electrifying film in years. A dazzling spectacle.” –-Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

Special Features: DVD-ROM Features, Scene Access, Interactive Menus, Documentaries, Cast/Crew Bios, Filmographies, Story Boards, Music Videos, Theatrical Trailer, Web Access

Our thank-you of the week goes out to Sue for This Week's Picks.

Do you have a favorite DVD Movie you would like to see posted here? Drop me an e-mail and we will get it posted.

    The Next Best Thingicon

The sparks fly and laughs follow when Rupert Everett and Madonna team up for this irresistibly funny and heartwarming movie directed by John Schlesinger (Midnight Cowboy).

Abbie (Madonna) and her friend Robert (Rupert Everett) would make the perfect couple – except for one small complication: He’s gay. We’ll, at least they don’t have to worry about sex messing up their relationship. Or do they? One night, loneliness gets the best of them, and before one can scream “reality check,” Abbie and Robert become lovers and, ultimately, parents. But when Abbie meets her dream man (Benjamin Bratt) Abbie and Robert’s unconventional family is put to the test. Can best friends form the best of families, especially when one is gay? The answer emerges with wit, warmth, and a bundle of wonderful surprises in the The Next Best Thing.

Special Features: Music Videos, Theatrical Trailer, Interviews, Interactive Menus, Cast/Crew Bios

"The Next Best Thing" is rated "PG-13" and has a running time of 107 minutes.

    North By Northwesticon

Washington. Jefferson. Lincoln. Teddy Roosevelt. Alfred Hitchcock. No, you won’t find the great director’s face alongside the Mount Rushmore Presidents. Just the same, the filmmaker has indelibly linked himself with that national monument, making it the setting for North By Northwest's bravura climax. Gary Grant teams with Hitchcock for the fourth and final time in this superlative espionage caper judged one of the American Film Institute’s Top 100 American Films and spruced up with a new digital transfer and remixed Dolby Surround Stereo.

Grant plays a Manhattan advertising executive plunged into a realm of spy (James Mason) and counterspy (Eva Marie Saint) and variously abducted, framed for murder, chased and, in another signature set piece, crop-dusted. He also holds on for dear life from that famed carved rock (for which back lot sets were used). But don’t expect the Master Of Suspense to leave star or audience hanging.

Special Features: Production Notes, Theatrical Trailer, Scene Access, Audio Commentary, TV Spots, Behind-the-scenes Footage, Photo Gallery, Interactive Menus

"North By Northwest" has a running time of 136 minutes.

    I Dreamed of Africaicon

Kim Basinger portrays Kuki Gallmann in this true story about a woman who gives up her comfortable life in Italy to run a farm with her husband and son in rural Africa.

While the land is magnificent, it is also dangerous, and our heroine soon learns that behind the beauty of nature lies pain, passion, joy and hardship.

Special Features: Featurette, Theatrical Trailer, Production Notes, Audio Commentary, Sep. Film Score Audio Track, Interactive Menus, Scene Access, Cast/Crew Bios

"I Dreamed of Africa " is rated "PG-13" and has a running time of 115 minutes.
