I checked the FAQ about this but to my understanding it was a little vague. I presently have Windows 7 Ultimate 32 Bit installed. Can I upgrade this to the 64 bit version without losing all my prgram installations, etc., or do I have to do a clean install again. ---------------------------------------------- Joe F Delahaye

You have to do a clean install. Make sure that your computer can handle 64bit. FWIW, you'll need to have at least 4gigs of RAM to see any real benefit. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf MacBook Pro 15" (Intel i5 2.40GHz), Gateway 15.4" Laptop, Windows Vista Ultimate , Photoshop CS5

[/QUOTE] You don't necessarily need to do a clean install, since you can upgrade from 32bit to 64bit and keep your programs / docs etc. However, I will also say you are taking a substantial risk that those programs may not operate properly anyway by upgrading. The clean install is the safest and best way to make the jump, then you can easily reinstall whatever programs you have. Once you do reinstall your programs, you may need to utilize the compatibility choices to run them or check for upgrades to your programs for 64 bit use. Most people will tell you that you can run 32 bit progs on a 64 bit machine via backwards compatibility, which simply isn't true. 4 gig of RAM is the basic requirements imo, for 32 or 64 bit. However 64 bit uses the 4 gigs of ram and system resources far more effectively and efficiently than 32 bit. I don't know if you are making this jump for personal use or for a corporate testing platform. If it is for corporate use, test all your programs thoroughly before rolling-out to other users. Little problems tend to show themselves as lengthy testing continues. ---------------------------------------------- SM Wright Systems Administrator

After you do a clean install, you can still recover the files from the windows.old folder - it will save you some hassle.
