Hi all, Firstly, let me apologize for my complete lack of knowledge - and this is really a last resort to see if I can get someone who knows about networks to give me a helping hand. My problem: I have an external Media Center HDD with files on that i want to copy over to another external HDD. I am able to plug both devices into my USB ports on my laptop, but for some reason my laptop won't let me plug both in at once, which means i would have to copy files from one device to my laptop and then to the other device, which is VERY time consuming. The Media Center HDD has a LAN port on it, so I'm trying to connect it to my laptop directly via an ethernet cable. The media center also plugs straight into my TV and gives me an an on-screen display so I can set up the Network connections there, but the trouble is I don't know what I'm setting up! So.... on my TV screen in the Media Center settings menu I have Network Settings entitled "Wired LAN Setup". When i select this with the remote I am presented with 2 options - either DHCP (AUTO) or FIX IP (MANUAL) If I select DHCP (AUTO), it comes back saying "OK", and then "Save settings" and that's that. If I select FIX IP (MANUAL), it gives me 3 fields that need filling in - the IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway. Now, obviously it would be preferable to choose the DHCP option so i don't have to mess around with stuff, as I don't know what the manual settings should be. But, how do I then connect to the media center with my laptop? Do I need to change settings in the Network and Internet > Network Connections window in Vista? And if so, what do i need to change and how? Or, if i choose the manual option, what do i need to tell it the IP, Subnet, and Gateway addresses are? And then do i still need to change settings in Vista to accept it? I have a very basic knowledge of Networks but i'm truly stumped so any help would be very very very much appreciated!! Thanks in advance!!
