Hi, Recently I had to change my motherboard, vista was doing ok before, now when I try to start vista it will go through all the process of booting up until it gets to the loading screen with the loading green bar on the bottom. It will stay her for like 2 seconds and then reboots automatically, it does this for safe mode and normal booting. Already tried Startup Repair but it didn't change anything. Please Help. Thanks

It sounds like your new motherboard is totally different from your prior. Because of this, Vista (and WinXP) recognize a major change in the HAL (hardware abstraction layer). You'll have to do a complete reinstall of Vista. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 700C - P4 1.8gz, 1gig RAM, ATi Radeon 9550; SB Audigy SE; Windows Vista Business, Photoshop CS3, Nikon D200

Ohh I really didn't wanted to do that. I have two HDD's and would like to do a backup before reinstalling Vista, what's the best way to do this backup of my master HDD to my secondary one if I can't access Windows and can't install my older MB because it's fried. Thanks for your reply

Unfortunately, when you make a major change to computer hardware (i.e. the motherboard), you'll need to do a clean install. You said you could get into Safe Mode. That should allow you to back up yur data files to either a secondary internal or externa HD. From there, you'll have to do a clean install. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 700C - P4 1.8gz, 1gig RAM, ATi Radeon 9550; SB Audigy SE; Windows Vista Business, Photoshop CS3, Nikon D200

Actually I can't go into safe mode, I can only access the repair options by booting from the DVD. I know there are ways to access the HDD without having to go into windows. I'm just not familiarized with them. Maybe a program that can be run from a DVD, CD or USB will do the job.

Well...here's where it gets tough. You can run the recovery console, but your data will probably be toast. One option (had to do this one time) is to remove the hard drive and temporarily slave it to another computer. Back up the data, and then put the HD back into the computer with the new mobo. Reinstall Vista as necessary. That's about the only way I know to get the data off of a HD in a situation like this. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 700C - P4 1.8gz, 1gig RAM, ATi Radeon 9550; SB Audigy SE; Windows Vista Business, Photoshop CS3, Nikon D200
