I was on Vaca for a week and when I got back my network was not working. There were several power outages during the week I was away. Anyway, I rebooted the cable modem and the router (D-Link DIR-655) and it worked but was very slow for a short time. Now I can only get on the internet when I connect directly to the cable modem. I have tried two used routers and one new one and all connect only to a local network and not the internet. Comcast says its is the routers, D-Link a& Linksys says it isn't the routers, and Microsoft wants $59 to just to connect me to one of there tech experts.... I have tried rebooting everything on the network, changed Cat 5 cables. I can transfer files between computers. When I tried running the IPconfig /renew I get the error message "An error occurred while releasing interface loopback pseudo-interface 1. The system cannot find the file specified." Also during the IPconfig /release I get an error message that says " No operation can be performed on the Local Area Network while it has its media disconnected." Any ideas on what the problem is or how to fix it? I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, TJ

Chances are the router got fried with the power outages. Check with Comcast first to see if they identify you by the MAC address of your computer (that's the hard coded address of your NIC - network card). If so, you'll have to configure the router to broadcast the MAC - you have to go into the router's setup screen to do this. Your router mfgr should have provided instructions on how to setup/configure it. BTW, is this a wired or wireless network? ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 700C - P4 1.8gz, 1gig RAM, nVidia 5200; SB Audigy SE; Windows Vista Business, Photoshop CS3, Nikon D200 and D100

What is the vendor and model of your cable modem? If you have a Motorola from Comcast, you may be able to get info on both it and connectivity issues by directing your browser to http:// 192.168.100.1, the LAN side IP address of the cablemodem, then looking in the Configuration > Log section. What are your geographic weather specifics? Did weather cause the outages? Are you in a remote, cold, dry area, prone to lightning during storms which might have induced transients that could conceivably fry every electric device connected to your A/C mains that wasn't protected from surges ? Did you experience wet storms, which may have compromised any number of outside cable company cables and components? Electric substation switching transients can also cause surges, though your home outlet receptacles usually are designed to arc over at I think 6 kVAC. You can mitigate by using power strips with surge protectors. Another potentially harmul phenomenon is ESD (common in dry climates), via signal conductors or grounds in cables. It's sometimes best to unplug sensitive electronic stuff from the wall when you're away for extended periods. Also check the DSL Reports forums. Newby

With time warner, no storms (well not until after the problem occured). I just installed a new netgear gigabit wired network card. It was working well for about a week. same results when connecting directly (actually received a way above average connection, up and down loading) also can access files between computers as well. and my other computers access the internet fine (wired). when typing ipconfig/renew (even though it cannot release) I get the same error, plus a new one... unable to contact dhcp server. the computer also has a default ip address of 169.254.131.70 everything is plugged into a battery backup surge protector, also running vista, have SP1 RC1 installed on the machine as well. I noticed the device manager listed the network card as a Realtek, so I uninstalled the device in device manager, let windows find it, then had to manually pick the correct driver. same problem though.

I searched through the Microsoft Vista discussion groups and found a thread referencing how to do this. Please see: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.mspx?&query=nt4&lang=en&cr=US&guid=&sloc=en-us&dg=microsoft.public.windows.vista.installation_setup&p=1&tid=c381ad41-a570-42c5-8b21-748513c9df0a ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 700C - P4 1.8gz, 1gig RAM, ATi Radeon 9550; SB Audigy SE; Server 2008 Enterprise, Photoshop CS3, Nikon D200
