First, try clearing the cache. Also, are these legit copies of WinXP and Office?

What plug-ins for IE do you have installed? i.e. stuff like Flash, Quicktime, etc.
Also, did this problem start after downloading/installing a particular program or visiting a particular website?

I have quicktime but that has been there for years the same for media player in fact all my plugins are long standing installations... I don't know when it started as I don't normally do manual updates & I only found this problem because I decided to do a manual update check... The Code I send in the error report is "0xc0000005" & I did try to find an answer in MS help but got bogged down in the site... It's a pig to use!!! The latest thing that I have done is download/instal an update from MS that was automatically generated last week & a registry scan with "Registry mechanic" which I've used a dozen times before!!!

Best thing I can suggest is to try and reinstall IE7 from Add/Remove Programs. I believe that will run a "repair". Beyond that, if it doesn't work, you might want to post the question in the appropriate forum at Microsoft's website.

I've already re-installed IE7 twice from the Add/Remove programs (the last time about 2 hours ago) & had to do a system restore both times to get back to where I originally was, & I tried to do an update when it was in IE6 default but the same thing happened... Looks like I'll have to do the "MS runaround again", they don't like to make life easy for us "older plebs"!!!
I'll probably get my local IT Guru to do a complete "detox" job on my system as it is about 4 years or more since my last upgrade of hardware etc...

Given this info, you might be looking at having to do a complete reformat/reinstall. It's a pain in the butt, but I'd bet you could do it yourself.
Back up all your data to either a CD/DVD or external HD. Then put in the WinXP CD and reboot. Go into the startup when you see "press any key to enter setup" and go thru the screens to delete the partition and start the reinstall. Choose Quick Format (regular format checks for hard disk errors, and unless you have any, Quick Format will do the trick).
I've had to do this a couple of times with friends computers, mostly 'cause of malware that just totally goofs up the system.

I've lodged an error report with MS in Sydney Australia before I go to the extremes of reformat/reinstall... When I went to put in the report as an IE7 problem I was informed that support would charge me a $$$ amount as IE does not have a free support service,,, So I filed the report as a "MS update" problem & this gets free support because it is a MS service... MS accepted the report & now I'm just waiting for them to get back to me for the first time... When/if I get a result to my problem I will let you know for future requests for @ssistance... Meanwhile "watch this space"...

As promised I am letting you know what the final outcome was with my IE7/MS UPDATES problem... MS contacted me by phone from Malaysia & an IT reviewed the problem as described by me... He tried a number of options. all of which didn't work & finally he had to finish the call as it was time for him to finish for the day... The next day I had to call MS in Malaysia as they had not called back as promised... A different IT reviewed the problem & after some time (of line) he said he was going to send me an "AUTO UPDATE" that he wanted me to download & run... I did this & it worked so now I can download my updates for Windows & MS... The update is "autoupdate.bat"... So simple & it ONLY took 4 weeks to resolve...Sheeesh!!!
