XP Pro SP2, Intel processor and such with ADSL modem and wireless router.
I shutdown normally on Friday 6 April 2007 and restarted on Monday 10 April and all went well until after the XP screen when black and stayed that way. It did not get to the login screen. I tried safe mode but it starts and loads a lot of screen files abut gets to a point and just hangs with no HDD activity. I then tried all the options, last good boot, safe mode in all varients, debugg and so on but nothing got windows to start. The only variation was i got the checkdisk to start screen and the message that it would start in 10 seconds unless cancelled. The only problem was that it counted down to 8 seconds and then froze. Cancelling early just resulted in the startup screen and the subsequent freeze at black screen.
Tried to boot from XP Installation disck and here it got strange. On loading the disk via the boot sequence in the bios (it just went straight to it) I got a blue screeen with XP Setup as the title. I asked if i wanted to load SCSI or RAID drivers and did not wait for much of an answer before goint to ask if I wanteed some other option and then started to load all these drivers (cd, keyboard, blaa blaa) and after all these it then anounced that "Window Starting" except it did not, it just stayed there.
My problem is i cannot get to the Recovery Console off the XP Disk it seems to go straight to the XP Setup screen and does not give me the recovery option. It may be because the partition i have the system on is a FAT32 formatted drive and it may only work on NTSF, just do not know.
So any idead on getting to a suystem propt - that would be a success. I have thought of gettting another computer and pulling the broken computer disk and having a look at the drives but there is an easier way I jhope. Also this will not help except to replace ome of the system files.
Over to those who like a challenge - I really need that help - thanksXP Pro SP2, Intel processor and such with ADSL modem and wireless router.

In the end the solution was very simple - a bad connection between the contacs of the RAM and the motherboard. By removing the RAM and reinserting them, windows loaded normally. It is intersting to note that the POST in the BIOS load up found the RAM OK and no hardware warnings were issued. The colleague who put me onto this solution said he only found it out by accident after he had gone through hours of loading files and accessing the HDD from another computer and generally tearing the thing apart. The last thing he did was to swap RAM and then after it worked replaced them to see that they were OK and it was just a slight bit of moisture or dust on the contacts that had been the cause of all his woes. I was just lucky as I was about to start removing HDD and such as well.
I hope this helps anyone who has a similar problem. It might be a good start point for any failure to start problems as in the end the solution took 5 minutes.
Thats all from me.
