hello everyone, i'm new here but i did try searching quite a bit through threads over the last year to help keep repeated threads down. here's the quick explanation of the problem: Just as windows xp professional is about to finish loading (black screen/sp logo/blue load gif) the monitor flashes and the computer resets. the computer will do this consistantly as long as you let it. what i've tried: 1) access safe mode... i've done the press f8 deal... i get the standard options and no matter what option i choose nothing changes. i can not access safe mode no matter what. 2)run boot disk... i've tried running boot discs... yes several in desperation... xp/me/98 they all bring me to the c: prompt in dos and that's where it ends. i can access any type off my HDD but i can't load anything. I can not access and cd drive through the dos prompt but i can access the floppy. 3)swap power supplies... swapped power supply... nothing happens. through desperation i disconnect all accessories accept for the monitor/keyboard/mouse... no changes... i disconnect my floppy/cd burner/dvd burner drives and i get 3 short error beeps.. pause and the 3 beeps repeat... noloading and now the computer won't even try to bring anything up on the screen. i try every combination. the only thing that comes close is leaving the cd burner plugged in. with the floppy and dvd burner disconnected the windows xp screen seems to load just a few seconds longer... could be my imagination through desperation. i really want to fix this but local shops charge $75 an hour here to diagnose the problem. reformating my drive isn't an option as i know the info is still accessable and i need it. replacing a hard drive/video card/etc is also out of the option as a new computer of equal/better components is only $200. any suggestions on how i can access safe mode or some ideas of things i can try to work in dos would be greatly appreciated!! sorry for the long post... jeff

What software did you install prior to this problem? [last time I had this problem was when Symantec installed an "update" to their AV program - I would up having to reformat the computer - which is also why I'll never use anything from Symantec again]. Try booting with the WinXP CD and get into the Recovery Console. I will warn you that you may be looking at having to reformat before being able to access your data to retrieve it. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 1800 - P4 1.8gz, 1gig RAM, nVidia 5200; SB Live Value; Windows Vista Business, Photoshop CS2, Nikon D200 and D100
