Hello, i am new here and i would like someone to help me Well, i have 2 pc that are connected each other via utp cat5 cable. I know that i don't have any hardware problems. What ip address, subnet mask, default gategay, preferred dns server must i put to the computers? Note:the light of the ethernet adapter of the back of one pc is off and i don;t know why, but if i connect it direct to the router is on. I want to make a home network without internet Thank you

First, are you using a crossover cable? If not, they won't be able to talk to each other. Next, what OS is each running? That will make a big difference in how to connect them. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 1800 - P4 1.8gz, 1gig RAM, nVidia 5200; SB Live Value; Windows XP Professional, Photoshop CS2, Nikon D200 and D100

i don't know if i use a crossover cable. The OS is windows xp in both computers. The strange thong is that i home already a network between them. The pc A is connected with the modem via usb and the modem with pc B via utp and everything is ok.Both computers have internet and they see each other. But if i connect them directly here is the problem. Once i have connected the one with an other pc via the same utp cable and i gave the following: pc A IP:192.168.178.2 subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 gateway:192.168.178.1 dns server192.168.178.1 pc B IP:192.168.178.3 subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 gateway:192.168.178.2 dns server192.168.178.1 And was ok But now this pc B i have the problem i refferd before

Connecting both to a modem doesn't constitute a network. If you have DSL or Broadband, I'd strongly recommend you get a router. Connect the modem to the router, and then each computer to the router. From there run WinXP's network connection wizard to make sure that each PC has the same workgroup name. From there you'll have to enable file/print sharing on each PC. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 1800 - P4 1.8gz, 1gig RAM, nVidia 5200; SB Live Value; Windows XP Professional, Photoshop CS2, Nikon D200 and D100

Hello Pasch. Check the following: 1:The Cross Cable. 2:The Ethernet Interface. Give this IP: A:192.168.0.1 B:192.168.0.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 to both A & B. Then try to ping A & B. No need for Default gateway and DNS as you dont have any Domain environment. I hope this should work.
