You've done a very nice job troubleshooting heather. One thing that does come to mind is firewalls or 3rd party software. Try using msconfig diagnostic startup, if that works it's 3rd party software.
Also since this happens on xp, try disabling net crawler (tools > folder options > view tab > uncheck the first thing). By default xp will search for any shares, and this causes added traffic. I would also remove all extra protocols. I.E., just use tcp/ip, remove netbeui and ipx/spx You could also try resetting the tcp/ip stack: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q299357&SD=MSKB& Has this ever worked, or just recent? If it's recent try system restore. You might want to go through the network wizard again, since it auto assigns all the ip addresses. Try help & support > network diagnostics, to find problems. Try switching the cables, to see if it is a cable/hardware issue. If possible, directly connect the pc's together to take the router out of the equation. Update the NIC drivers, check the nic's on the HCL - www.microsoft.com/HCL. Maybe try redecting the NIC's using device manager. Scan both pc's for spyware with the utility from www.lavasoftusa.com Do an in place repair - restart with xp cd, press any key, press enter, f8, r for repair. And scan for viruses! Well, you can try netmon but that would take a lot of learning. This issue will probably just take too long to narrow down. There's no point of waisting a week on something so complex as slow behavior.
Why not backup the data to cdrw and format and install windows xp? Windows xp is just awesome compared to windows 98. It's more secure, stable, and more reliable. Also, as more people install xp more programmers will make programs just for xp. If 80% of the people out there use windows xp, 80% of the developers will make programs for xp, it's simply business. You'll probably be better off long term using an OS most people use and support, rather than using an OS few people use and support. However if it's been less than 30 days you can still get a refund. Something just struck me. From what I recall, WinXP doesn't have NetBIOS built in natively. Try setting TCP/IP as your default protocol and delete NetBIOS entirely.
I have a similar setup and am using just TCP/IP (two computers connected to a wireless DSL router - w/ very little lag in accessing each other, or the DSL connection) |
