First, best practice. When going to windows update, disable your antivirus, and close anything in memory that's 3rd party. You might want to try safe mode with networking (restart and press f8)

Try clearing your cache, temp, history, cookies. Delete the WUtemp folder in the root partition. Also delete the windows update folder in program files. Delete c:\windows\windows update setup.log

Try registering urlmon -

start > run > regsvr32.exe urlmon.dll

Look at event viewer and search help & support w/ the error messages -

start > right click my computer > left click manager > double click event viewer > double click application, double click any errors on right hand side.


Reinstall windows, change internet options to default security.

Try the winxp corp windows update.
