Congradulations! Your the winner of a corrupted registry. In XP you just do this

boot to recovery console (boot from cd, r for repair, type instalation, type password)

type:

ren c:\windows\system32\config\system sysold
ren c:\windows\system32\config\software softold
copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system
copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config\software

Might need to reinstall some apps, have fun.

Windows xp is NOT the same as win98. XP is a newer version of windows 2000, which is built on the NT foundation. 98 is built on the win9x foundation, which started with windows 3.1.

In general xp is VERY stable for many reasons. For one, it has a hardware abstration layer (hal) that talks to the hardware. For two, no software applicatoin can 'talk' to the hardware, which keeps the ssytem stable. For 3, no application can take down the operating system.

But anyway, blaming your personal problems as "microsofot forcing a bad product out" is unfair. Using microsoft as a scapegoat wont help your pc. Upgrading is a major operation, you should always backup your data before doing this.

If your pc gets blue screens, write down the errors. If the pc auto restarts, go to my computer > advanced > startup and recovery settings > uncheck the 'automatically restart'. And of course your problems might be bad or incompatible hardware. Is this home built? Check your hardware on microsoft.com/HCL.

If your really hating windows xp, install win98. No ones putting a gun to your head. I bet once all your friends install xp and have no problems, you'll upgrade again.
