THe error msg is "operating system not found". This is a bios error message, not windows. WHen you start your pc, first the bios is run - basic input output self test. This just sends a signal to anything with a ROM chip to make sure it's there. Once the check is complete, the boot process is handed over to the boot strap loader. This finds the master boot record and loads the OS. For win9x the loader is io.sys. What the error means, is the BIOS could not find an operating system to transfer control to.

In most cases, this error is the result of bad hardware. So first boot from a boodisk. If you have a drive overlay, you need to load the drive overlay first. Once booted, use fdisk /status, to make sure the partitions are there. Then do a scandisk /surfacescan to check the hard drive. If all seems well, type: sys c: . This makes the drive bootable using the bootdisk, however only use a bootdisk that matche your OS. So if you have win98se installed, use a win98se bootdisk, if you use another bootdisk like a win95 bootdisk, your gonna have problems! Once you do that u should be able to boot into windows, if not you got hardware problems!
