win98 and win98se do not have system restore

Maybe he was restoring the registry? To do that you restart the pc, press f8, then choose command prompt only. At flashing curser you type: scanreg /restore, and restore from a previous day. By default this will only list the last backups. Win98 backs up your registry once per day, so you probably have the last 5 days there. If you want to change this, you edit c:\windows\scanreg.ini, change the MaxBackupCopies= to whatever you want.
