This sounds like a hardware problem, more specifically, related to the motherboard. Certain older systems, primarily Pentium systems that accomodated up to a 233mz Pentium Processor, had a limitation in the BIOS that could only utilize hard drives up to 8.2GB (I have a system that is like this - can't install WinXP for the exact same reason).
