If anything, it sounds like he's putting in the wrong type of RAM, or there needs to be something changed in the BIOS. First, I'd suggest removing the RAM, take it back and get your money back. Next, check out HP's web site to see if they offer RAM upgrades (installing RAM is easy - you just have to make sure it's seated correctly). If this computer person is using the wrong type of RAM, that would be the cause of your troubles.
