I've been having some problems with my computer hanging. It's not that it's locked up, the mouse still works... but the screen isn't refreshing and the apps aren't doing much of anything. I can't even bring up Task Manager.
Now it'll respond to CTRL-ALT-DEL, and I can fix the problem by logging off and then back on. So that indicated to me that it's something running in my user session rather than with the XP install. The logoff takes a while, as it tries to kill various programs. Now one thing I kind of noticed was that right after I did an 'END NOW' on ctfmon.exe everything came back to life.
So I investigated further. CTFMON.EXE is part of the Alternative input handling for Office XP(which I have installed), which sounded awfully suspicious. Anyway, I decided I did not need this anyway and found a knowledgebase article that explained how to get rid of it:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;282599
Now ctfmon.exe also relates to msctf.dll, which is mentioned in this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;317751
and this one:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314228
These talk about explorer and the task bar hanging... But they claim this is fixed by installing a new version of msctf.dll that was prior to XP SP1.(obviously it's not fixed)
Anyway, whatever. I went through the process in 282599 to make ctfmon.exe go away(uninstall alternative input from OfficeXP, Publisher and Frontpage) then unregistered msctf.dll, etc.
So far so good. My machine appears to be more responsive overall, and I haven't seen any more hangs. [emote|:D] But time will tell, sometimes I've gone for a couple of days without issue.

Ok, this solution is making my #1 thing wrong with XP list.(well Office XP) I have had 0 issues since I removed this from my system and the machine has become much faster and more responsive overall.
I'm going back to work tomorrow and I'm going to perform the same surgery on several of the desktops I'm responsible for introducing to XP and see if the similar issue disappears there as well. It's less pronounced on our work computers, explorer just consumes 100% of the CPU but the machine still responds to commands.

Ok, results from my work computer...
The Alternative user Input crap from Office XP is not installed. [emote|:(] I'm also not seeing the ctfmon.exe process start up.
But I still went ahead with the KB article instructions to unregister msimtf.dll and msctf.dll from the System32 directory. Had to reboot because the DLLs had already been loaded. I'm going to run with this for a while and see how things improve.

Could be... That's what mhfm would say, anyway! [emote|:)]
Ok, dang XP computer at work went into 100% explorer overload yesterday despite my change. But I was installing and uninstalling a bunch of instant messaging apps to evaluate, I might have made something else happen.
Otherwise I'm having good luck with this solution. I wonder what other crap is installed like this I don't want or need. going looking. [emote|:)]

Ok, it's been several days now, and I'm seeing very positive results from this.
I've reported this to Microsoft through our support contact at work, so I'll see if they have anything to say.
I'd encourage people to take a look at that KB article on removing the CTF stuff if you are experiencing odd hangs and other behavior in XP.
